1st January 2018 Mt. Biking: Short two rivers, Deben to the Orwell Wind Direction: Wind Stength: Surf / Sea State: Air Temperature: Sea Temperature: Weather: cloudy Max Speed: 19.24 (knots - unless stated otherwise) Distance Covered: 12.90 mile (Nautical Miles - unless stated otherwise) Sunday 1st January 2018 – Bike **** Short two rivers, Deben to the Orwell – cloudy :( Got really bored with the crap on TV last night so went to bed at 10.30 and missed all the celebrations! I was hoping to go windsurfing first thing at Levington but checked the conditions and as the forecast wind was dropping fast plus with the tide going out it was not worth the effort, shame really as I have been out on the 1st two years running! With the winds light all day it was a good chance to get out on the bikes to try and start losing those extra pounds put on over Christmas! So, after breakfast Mag and I set off with Felixstowe Ferry the destination as we knew Mark Swain was racing in the Handicap race. We biked through the town which was very quiet as only 2/3 shops open:) then into the Grove which was very muddy and made Mag a little nervous! We survived the slippery path and got to the safety of Ferry Lane, past the golf club continuing along the road to the Ferry. It was heaving with people and we were just in time for the racing with the last few boats just launching including Mark Swain with his son Nick. The wind was very light now and the tide was whizzing out and some of the cats took advantage of a tow out to avoid hitting the jetty but not Mark who managed to sail away:) With a good crowd watching the 12 boats lined up for the start which was aborted for some reason, I think a few of the boats had been taken down River by the strong current and had to be towed back! It took 45 minutes to start the race, we were getting bored but the count down started and the boats managed to get going, shame Mark and Nick were facing the wrong way! They had cruelly placed the first bouy a few hundred metres towards the sea, getting to it was no problem with the help of the tide but heading back proved much harder in very light winds and a strong tide against them! The boats lead by a lazer bunched up hugging close to the shore as they slowly sailed upriver. Poor Mark and Nick at this point laying down in the boat looked pretty bored and wishing they had stayed in front of the fire were bringing up the rear! With light rain starting Mag and I started for home along the coast path which was a nightmare to navigate on bike as we had never seen so many people out for a walk! We made it to the road at The Dip, then down to The Fludgers where Mag couldn’t face the busy prom and headed home while I slowly continued along the heaving prom past the large number of open water swimmers many of whom had gone a funny colour because of the cold, I can’t see much fun to be had swimming in the sea at this time of the year! I made it to the pier and pushed my bike round the boardwalk running into Linda and Neil Hurrell:) I had a nice chat before carrying onto Landguard Reserve ending up at the end of the beach near the River Orwell. Then it was onto the café at the view point as I needed the loo before returning home on the road. When I got in Mag had made me a chicken sandwich and lit the fire :) So a nice start to the year a 13 mile bike ride being out nearly three hours, might even get a trip to Point Clear windsurfing on Wednesday but might be too windy as forecasting 30/50 mph winds !!!!
